Question about Newborough poultry farm

by Liz Harris
(Oxfordshire)

Hello, I've really enjoyed reading through your impressive blog on Anglesey.

We are planning a trip in our VW for June and surveying the campsites. We'll bring bikes - unlikely to move the van for the 6 days stay.

What I notice from maps is that there is a large poultry farm just up from White Lodge or down from Ty Croes Farm. Old reviews of the model village refer to the terrible smell from the poultry farm. If it's still in existence, that smell will dominate the campsites but I cannot see any mention of a smell on the campsite reviews. I cannot find any reference to a poultry business there in my on-line searches though.

So, quite simply, do you happen to know whether there is still a poultry farm in Newborough?

Many thanks!!

Liz Harris

Dear Liz

In am delighted to have reassured you.

Newborough Forest is a fabulous place to cycle in itself and just on the other side of the Cob is the village of Malltraeth. There's a cycle path that runs from here along the River Cefni that will bring you to Llangefni, the county town. It's about five miles.

One particular reason I mention this is that you will find the lovely Mona Cafe opposite the clock, which presents customers with the best egg and chips I know of. The large windows offer a fabulous view of the busy-ness that preoccupies those not on holiday.

I thank you for your very kind words about Anglesey Hidden Gem and hope you have a lovely time.

My very best wishes to you.

Wil

Newborough's lovely
by: Anonymous

Hi Wil,

Many thanks for responding so helpfully.

We have gone ahead and booked the site at Newborough and are more than happy at the location and the lovely reception during the booking process. We'll be coming to your beautiful Anglesey in June in our VW, and then travel by bike and foot - can't wait. There are many many other sites that would also be lovely as you say.

Thanks again - unlike a chicken farm that always smells terrible near our home, it is clear that the Newborough poultry farm is very differently managed and kept considerably cleaner.

I will be returning to your site for further research before our holiday,

Kind regards
Liz

Eau de Newborough
by: Wil from Anglesey Hidden Gem

Dear Liz

I live two fields away from a poultry farm (officially a Broiler Farm) and have survived for almost two decades.

About once every two or three weeks they clear out the bedding and sundry muck and there can be a smell if the wind is blowing this way. It lasts for a very brief time and I forget about it quickly.

Yes, there is a broiler in Newborough at the bottom of the hill about half a middle outside of the village. The lack of comments from the campsites about the farm would, in all likelihood, confirm my own experience.

Scan all the comments on Anglesey Hidden Gem and there's not a single mention of this. This website is visited more than a thousand times a day so people have had ample opportunity to make their observations known over the years.

If this does concern you then the entire Island of Anglesey is dotted with campsites located in stunningly beautiful locations.

Don't let your concerns put you off. The area around Newborough Beach, Llanddwyn Beach and Llanddwyn Island is well worth visiting and staying in.

Happy Easter,

Wil
